Research Experience

Experiments

Worked with MIT Media Lab, Space Exploration Initiative

Climate CubeSat Co-building Outreach Program

2018-2019

Advisor: Ariel Ekblaw

  • Designing      and building a climate science CubeSat
  • We were unable to launch due to complications

Experiments

Sent to space with Cubes In Space program

Changes in Different Fabrics after Exposure to Space

2017

Lead: Julie Seven Sage

  • Nine different types of fabric were sent into space and were analyzed to see if there was any change after that exposure

Aluminum Metal Foam VS. Aluminum Block

2017

Lead: Julie Seven Sage

  • Pieces of Aluminum Metal Foam and Aluminum were sent into space and the x-ray film inside was analyzed to see if there was any difference of how much radiation it let through, as well as strength test to see if radiation exposure would weaken it

Single Board Computer Functionality on High Altitude Balloon

2017

Lead: Nathan Pennie

  • An SBC that he designed and built was sent into space and we analyzed the data for any anomalies, failures, or data corruption

Single Board Computer Functionality on Sounding Rocket

2017

Lead: Nathan Pennie

  • An SBC that he designed and built was sent into space and we analyzed the data for any anomalies, failures, or data corruption

Types of Glass and Blocking Radiation

2018

Lead: Julie Seven Sage

  • Three types of glass were sent into space and the x-ray film was analyzed to see which type of glass better deflected or blocked cosmic radiation

Different Shapes of Structural Foam

2018

Lead: Julie Seven Sage

  • The voids inside of the structural foam were of different shapes. The strongest 4 shapes were chosen to go into the cube, where weights were placed on top, and the foams were strength tested afterwards

Radiation Exposure to Blue Pigments

2019

Lead: Julie Seven Sage

  • Four different blue pigments, including the most recent discovery of YInMn Blue, were sent into space and their color degradation was analyzed

Different Wall Thicknesses of Structural Foam

2019

Lead: Julie Seven Sage

  • Four different wall thicknesses of the strongest structural foam from the previous structural foam experiment were placed into the cube with weights on top, and the foams were strength tested afterwards

Different Glass Shapes and Deflecting Radiation

2021

Lead: Julie Seven Sage

  • Four different shapes of the glass that is most commonly used for space vehicles were put into the cube, and the x-ray film will be analyzed to see how the cosmic radiation was deflected

Centrifugal Forces on Different Wall Thicknesses of Structural Foam

2022

Lead: Julie Seven Sage

  • The same four different wall thicknesses of structural foam from the previous structural foam experiment were placed into the cube, with a cut out in the middle to put weights, and the foams will be strength tested after they are launched

Rocket Forces on Tattoos

2022

Lead: Julie Seven Sage

  • Tattoos on fake skin were put into the cube in different orientations, and will be analyzed for any movement of the ink inside of the skin

Rocket Forces on Prosthetic Eyes

2022

Lead: Julie Seven Sage

  •  Prosthetic eyes and clay were used to make simulated eyeballs, one of which was flown on a rocket and the other kept on Earth to look for damage due to g-forces
